Questions – agriculture

Why is it worthwhile to make an effort to obtain good roughage from grassland?

Subject to correct nitrogen fertilisation and agricultural practices, large crops of dry mass, protein and energy are possible, which often exceed other types of forage plants.

Also it a relatively cheap form of fodder production, due to the low cost of seeds and plant protection products, simple cultivation and harvest mechanisation. Further, the short grasses field cultivation periods, which remain in use usually for 1 – 3 years does not overcomplicate the rotation system. These plants leave good soil for the next rotation crop. Forage grasses post harvest remains have a positive effect on soil physical properties, improving its structure, increasing the sorption complex and storage capacity.

Forage grasses are most commonly cultivated at farms which have little permanent grasslands or insufficient fodder base for ruminantia livestock.
